Lubbock is the eleventh largest city in Texas and is ranked eighty seventh in the US in terms of population. The total population in the city is estimated to be around 225,000 as of 2009 while the entire Lubbock County has a population of around 270,000. Besides being a large city in its county, it is also major commercial and educational hub in the region too. The two of the most popular higher education universities in Lubbock include the Texas Tech and Lubbock Christian Universities. It is not the higher education where this city is in the forefront. Lubbock is home to the Lubbock High School which is the only high school offering International Baccalaureate program in the region. Geographically, Lubbock is spread across nearly 300 square kilometres of area and is located at around 990 meters above sea level. As with Texas in general, Lubbock has a semi arid climate most year round. The average temperatures range from a high of 33.5 degree Celsius in July to a low of 11 degree Celsius in January. Traditionally, the cotton industry has been the forte for Lubbock. It has the world's largest contiguous area under cotton cultivation. The education and healthcare sectors in Lubbock are its largest economic drivers.
